Wiesz continues to rule Placerville point standings with second
feature win of the year Saturday, May 17, 2008 Results
PLACERVILLE, CA (5-17-08) - Colby Wiesz of Colfax increased his early season point lead Saturday night at Placerville Speedway with his second feature win of the season in the 2008 New Car Dealers of El Dorado County, Hoosier Racing Tires, Coors Light championship campaign. Wiesz was joined in victory lane during the seventh championship event of the season by several northeast neighbors including Pro Stock winner Dan Brown Jr. of Nevada City, Pure Stock winner Mike McClure of Nevada City and Daniel Weger of Grass Valley . "I really have to thank John Taylor, he has given me a great car to drive each week," said Wiesz. "Tonight John, Andy and my dad had the car perfect I couldn't have asked for anything better." Late in the event on Saturday, a yellow flag flew when a broken brake roter was found on the track. That broken part came off Wiesz's #35 Thompson's Auto Centers sprint car, providing plenty of adversity late in the race. "I started feeling a vibration," said Wiesz. "While I was riding around during one of the yellows I noticed part of the brake rotor was gone and I had no brakes. That was probably the hardest five or six laps I have ever driven trying to keep the car down low with no brakes." Wiesz started the feature event on the pole position with Mike Benson of Calistoga on the outside. At the waving of the green flag Benson pulled into the lead entering the first turn but Wiez powered off the high side of the track and shot into the lead down the backstretch. Once in front, Wiesz maintained a healthy lead over Benson as the two top runners weaved in and out of traffic. Placerville's C.J. Humphreys started third in the event and managed his way past Benson for second place by the time the checkered flag waved. Benson finished in third followed by Herman Klein of Sacramento, Matt Barber of Placerville and Scott Russell of Placerville. With Saturday's sixth place finish, Russell is sure to advance in the point standings after Saturdays's event. Entering Saturday's race, David Robinson Jr. of Foresthill was in second place in the standings. Robinson suffered a damaging flip down the backstretch in his heat race and despite hard fought efforts in the pit area was unable to make the A-feature. Robinson remained positive despite the incident, traveling over to the grandstands and voluntarily joining the track announcer for colorful commentary for the rest of the night. Third place point runner Andy Forsberg of Auburn and fourth place Greg DeCaires of Elk Grove were absent to compete in the Bradway Memorial in Chico Saturday while fifth place runner Jimmy Trulli of Placerville was the second top point runner to go upside down in damaging fashion in heat race competition, being unable to make the 25-lap feature. With second through fifth absent from the event, Wiesz undoubtedly increased his point lead and Russell surely advanced on this night.
In the Pro Stock feature event, point leader Dan Brown Jr. of Nevada City posted his sixth feature event win o the season. This time the victory was no Sunday drive for Brown who started on the outside of the front row next to pole sitter Jeff Arbogast of Auburn. With the dropping of the green flag Arbogast took the initial lead and Brown began searching for a faster line to catch the only other feature winner of the year. The two front runners raced side by side for several laps, trading the lead back and fourth until the 12th lap when Brown made a successful pass for good to drive to his sixth win of the year. Arbogast claimed second place, followed by Placerville's Forryst Carnett, Mark Davis of Auburn and Dennis Armstrong of El Dorado. "That was frustrating trying to get around him but it was fun at the same time," said Brown. "It's a bummer we don't have more cars in this division or we could race like that everyweek. Tonight I was finally able to get underneath him (Arbogast) and get into the lead, he didn't make it easy that's for sure."
In the Pure Stock class, former track champion Mike McClure of Nevada City returned to the track and posted his first win of the season. McClure started on the pole of the 20-lap race and maintained the lead by several car lengths while a traffic broke took place behind him the entire race. Point lead Brian Stevens battled for the second position with Kevin Wirth for much of the event and former Champion Tom Tilford of Citrus Heights. The entire field raced side by at times battling for the top five positions. "I am glad I was ahead of all that stuff," said McClure. "It feels good to be back here tonight, its been awhile." McClure was followed across the line by Stevens, Wirth, Tilford and Jason Englund of Citrus Heights.
The Nor Cal Dwarf Cars returned on Saturday night and Daniel Weger of Grass Valley posted his first Placerville win of the year Wegar started all the back in the 14th position and powered his way through the field. At the line he was followed by Mike Grenert, Jeremy Blackshire, Scott Dahlgren and Ryan Winter. "We love this track, its great," said Wegar. 'We try to put on great show here and I really want to thank all my sponsors that help me out each week, without them I wouldn't be able to do this every week." Placerville Speedway will go dark, this coming Memorial Day weekend, to allow for a two day event at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico that includes the Civil War Sprint Cars on Sunday night, all part of the annual Silver Dollar Fair weekend. Racing will resume here on Saturday, May 31 with NMI Industrial night and the Golden State Challenge event which pays $3900 to win. For further information visit www.johnpadjenmotorsports.com online.
