Wiesz and Trulli top Placerville point standings entering fifth season event
Stevens honors late Terry Scher with early season point lead in Pure Stock division
by Bill Sullivan

PLACERVILLE, CA (4-22-08) - Following his victory last Saturday night in the John Taylor Motorsports #35 Sprint Car, Colby Wiesz of Colfax has increased his early season point lead in the 2008 New Car Dealers of El Dorado County, Hoosier Racing Tires, Coors Light championship racing season at Placerville Speedway.

This Saturday night will mark the fifth championship event of the season at the El Dorado County Fairgrounds. Wiesz and his winged 360 sprint car counterparts will be joined by Pure Stocks, Pro Stocks and the visiting Nor Cal Dwarf Cars in a full racing program that offers a great form of Saturday night family entertainment in El Dorado County.

Returning after his first victory since joining John Taylor's competitive team, Wiesz will look to maintain his point leading status as the season advances and will set his sights on his first Placerville championship and the third such title for Taylor as a car owner.

Entering Saturday's event, Placerville's own Jimmy Trulli is sure to be a contender as he enters the event in second place, 16-points behind Wiesz in the Hoosier Tires sprint car division. Last year Trulli was the runner up to the championship title following a late season charge in the standings. This season, the local fan favorite has gotten an early start towards a title at his hometown track.

Trulli is not the only local driver with a successful start to the season. Placerville's own Scott Russell and Andy Gregg are tied for the third position in the standings, 19-points behind Trulli. Former champion Andy Forsberg of Auburn rounds out the top five in the point standings, 25-points away from the lead.

The contest for Rookie of the Year is heating up at Placerville as well. Currently Myles Bishop of Escalon is the top contender, sitting eighth in the points. Trent Canalas of Fair Oaks while Christian Stover of Alpine is 17th sitting one position ahead of Billy Strange Jr. of Rancho Cordova and Cameron Mendes of Rohnert Park. Stacey Mathes of Fair Oaks and Brenton Nugent round out the top 25 in contention for the rookie honors.

In the Coors Light Pro Stock division, Dan Brown Jr. of Nevada City has won three feature events and leads the division by 12 digits over one time winner Jeff Arbogast of Auburn. Former four time super stock champion Dennis Ahart of Cameron Park is third, 15-points out of the lead. Del Tremblay of Camino is up to fourth in the standings while Forryst Carnett of Placerville rounds out the top five.

The Coca Cola Pure Stock division Brian Stevens of Pollock Pines continues to lead the standings. Stevens is amidst a career best season thus far, a performance that is a great tribute to the late Terry Scher, who mentored Stevens and got him started in racing with the team known as "The Wrecking Crew." Stevens leads the division by two points over Rick Grunert of Woodland. Young Jared Vilt of Cameron Park has moved up to third in the point standings in his quest for the Rookie of the Year title. Vilt trails Grunert by 19-points and sits 23 points ahead of local favorite lady driver Danielle Clausen of Placerville. Keith Fournier of Placerville rounds out the top five in this division.

The three track regulars will be joined by the Nor Cal Dwarf Cars who's point standings were not available at press time but can be found at www.dwarfworld.com. In this division look for returning favorites such as Mike Grenert, Shawn O'Leary, Daniel and Patrick Weger, Doug Martin and more.

The grandstands will open at 5 p.m. on Saturday with qualifying starting at 6:30. Adult tickets will be $12, juniors and seniors $10, children $5 and under six will be admitted for free.
