PLACERVILLE, CA (4-12-08) - After a midweek race that saw as many caution flags as laps, Placerville Speedway welcomed a night of trouble free, action packed racing on Saturday night. Five divisions were on hand for the event bannered as “Totally Wingless 2008” featuring the Bay Cities Racing Association’s Midgets and Midget Lites along with the Joe Hunt Magnetos Wingless Sprints, and the regular Pure Stock and Pro Stock divisions.

As the BCRA Midgets made their first appearance of the year here, a total of 21 of California’s most talented drivers formed the field. When the checkered flag waved it was USAC Western States star Robbie Flock of Murieta celebrating in victory lane.

Driving the always fast Mike Sala owned #19 Bob Wirth Mopar powered Spike chassis, Flock started the 25-lap feature event in the fourth position. At the waving of the green flag the initial lead went to American Canyon’s Travis Berryhill. Five laps into the race Flock had worked his way into the bridesmaid position and began setting his sights on Berryhill while Matt Streeter of Lathrop worked the third position.

On the 10th lap, Flock used lapped traffic to his advantage as Berryhill’s car began to tighten up on the Placerville clay and took the lead he would never relinquish. Working his way into the many backmarkers, Flock distanced himself by several car lengths over the field to claim the win. At the checkered flag Flock was followed by Streeter, Scott Perovich of Fresno, Berryhill.

Darrin Bolton of El Dorado Hills was the only local competitor in the midget division on Saturday. Bolton started sixth in the feature event and finished fifth when the checkered flag waved.

In the BCRA Midget Lites Division, Doug Nunes of Kingsburg drove a spectacular race to score his first Placerville win of the season. Nunes started in the fifth position and charged towards the front at the waving of the green flag. Cameron Beard of Turlock and Marshall Sexton of Ceres swapped the lead early in the race until Nunes moved in on lap five to pass both drivers.

Once in front Nunes drove to a distant lead and was followed at the checkered flag by Sexton, Beard, Doug Glass of Marysville and Rick Holbrook of Vacaville.

In the Wingless Sprint feature the green flag saw fourth place starter Josh Bates jump to the front and challenge pole sitter Darrell Hanestad of Clayton on the opening lap. The two drove side by side into the first turn until Hanestad powered into the official lead.

In the Pure Stock division Saturday night, former track champion Rick Grunert of Woodland returned to his winning ways. Grunert started on the pole of the 15-lap event and out ran Brian Stevens of Pollock Pines for the lead at the start. Placerville’s Danielle Clauson raced close behind the two leaders for the entire race to finish in third place, one of her best outings of her carrer. Chris Curtiss of Placerville was fourth followed b Cameron Park’s Jared Vilt.

Arbogast was followed across the line by Brown, Dennis Ahart of Cameron Park, Ray Trimble of Auburn and Del Tremblay of Camino.
