Wednesday’s race was an invitational event open to only the top 32
drivers in the current Civil War point standings. Magaruh was 19th in the
standings as he entered this event, which opened the 52nd Annual Gold Cup
at Silver Dollar Speedway, featuring four big days of racing and the World
of Outlaws Sprint Car Series.
Starting on the front row of the 30-lap feature event, Magaruh was
quick to grab the lead over his closest challenger at the green flag,
Herman Klein of Sacramento. Once in front Magaruh distanced himself from
Klein but his run to the front of the field was far from over as both
lapped traffic and several caution flags permitted both Klein and third
place runner Roger Crockett of Eugene, Oregon to close in on the leader.
As early as the fifth lap, Mark Tabor Sr. of Reno, Nevada went upside
down off the third turn to draw a red flag. Once the race was restarted,
Magaruh powered ahead of Klein again while Crockett overcame a battle with
Rohnert Park’s Brett Rollag for the third position. With 11 laps
complete, Magaruh worked his way into lapped traffic.
On the 12th lap, Klein got a brief peek at the lead when he went to the
low side of turns one and two and overtook Magaruh. Traveling down the
back stretch Magaruh rallied back to the front spot as Klein was then
challenged by Crockett for the bridesmaid position.
With 13 laps complete a yellow flag came out when Doug Machado of Elk
Grove spun out. During the caution, Colby Weisz of Colfax forfeited his
top five position when he stopped on the back stretch of the speedway and
was forced to restart from the rear of the field. Weisz entered the night
second in the point standings but rallied back to 14th when the checkered
flag waved.
At the checkered flag, Magaurh picked up the biggest win of his racing
career. Climbing from the car he was greeted by car owners Mark and Suzie
Flachman, both excited with the big win.
“I can’t believe this week, said Magaruh. “First the Placerville
Championship and now this. This is the biggest race I have ever won. I
just have to thank the good lord for everything and guiding us safely. I
can’t thank the Flachman’s enough for the opportunity to drive this
great car, they always put an excellent race car underneath whoever drives
this thing.”
Klein held off the challenges of Crockett for the second place
position. In the past Klein has had top finishes in Civil War events but
this was his highest finish in the Pacific Sprint Cup.
“We’ve run good here and as Marysville but never done too well in
this race,” said Klein. “I have to thank my car owner Harley VanDyke
for sticking with me through these past weeks, they have been tough ones
for us, things haven’t gone our way lately. This finish helps, that’s
for sure.”
Crockett finished in the third position, fending off challenges by
Rollag throughout much of the event. Entering the race Crockett was eyeing
a possible third Cup win but attributed the track conditions and an under
powered motor to his third place finish aboard the Paul Silva owned #57
which he drove to its second win here last year.
“We’re running and underpowered motor in this deal so that makes me
have to run harder with these guys,” said Crockett. “Tonight this
track wasn’t what we wanted for a race like this, it was really heavy
and pretty much only one lane. I did my best but was really no passing out
here tonight, it was a one lane deal.”
David Robinson junior finished fourth ahead of Chuck Gurney Jr. and
Robert Ballou.
Heat races were won Wednesday by Robert Ballou, Jeff Hallieb, Colby
Weisz and Carl Drolvoid. The B-main was won by Mark Hall of Nevada City,
the fast qualifier of the evening with an 11:867.
The Pacific Sprint Cars were joined Wednesday night by the Midget Lites
of Bay Cities Racing Association. Doug Hunting of Elk Grove drove from the
fourth position into the lead of the 20-lap event. At the finish line
Hunting was trailed by Jared Adams, Matt Sherman and Richard Bailey.
