No. 83 Danny Lasoski becomes the newest Gold Cup Champion.

CHICO, CA (09-16-00) - With the 47th Annual Gold Cup Race of Champions of the new millennium it was only appropriate that a new name was added to the list of Gold Cup winners Saturday night as Danny Lasoski of Dover, Missouri drove his way to a $20,000 victory at Silver Dollar Speedway. Saturday's win was the ninth season victory and first Gold Cup crown for Lasoski, who entered Saturday's event fourth in the World of Outlaw point standings.

When the green flag came out on the 40-lap event, the initial lead was claimed by Lasoski who started on the outside front row and muscled past pole-sitter and Thursday night preliminary winner Tim Shaffer exiting the second turn.

With only one-lap complete the race underwent a caution period as Johnny Herrera spun off of the second turn to bring out the yellow flag. On the ensuing restart Lasoski set the pace at the front stretch cone but Shaffer stayed within striking distance for the next two laps and redeemed the top position once again after passing Lasoski on the inside of the back stretch on the third lap.

Running more than a car length ahead of Lasoski, Shaffer's lead appeared strong but began to diminish somewhat at the six lap mark when he began working his way into lapped traffic and allowed Lasoski to move within a car length with Mark Kinser in his wake running in the third position and Sammy Swindell who had closed in on the top three in the fourth position.

With 11-laps complete the event went under caution again when Jac Haudenschild spun and stalled in the second turn to bring out the yellow flag just before Bryan Paulus converted it to a red flag with a roll-over in the fourth turn.

With a clear route to his advantage, Shaffer accelerated to a car lengths lead over Lasoski at the restart flag while Kinser and Swindell rounded out the top four.

Within three-laps of green-flag racing, Shaffer had already worked his way to a healthy lead of several car lengths over Lasoski and began working his way into lapped traffic once again just as he faced perhaps one of most unusual racing conditions as a vehicle accident in nearby Chico caused a major power outage on the Silver Dollar Fairgrounds, darkening the track and bringing the event to an immediate halt with 15-laps complete.

After a near 35-minute interruption in the program, Silver Dollar Speedway was once again illuminated and Shaffer was faced with building his once healthy lead up gain over Lasoski who was one of many drivers who had the opportunity to make adjustments to his Beef Packers #83 during the red flag condition.

Setting the pace at the green, Shaffer entered the first set of turns much like he had the previous restarts with Lasoski and Mark Kinser in tow. Running in the fast, lower groove of the track, Shaffer maintained the point on the opening lap and began stretching his lead to more than a car length over Lasoski once again while "The Dude" worked the high side of the track attempting to gain enough momentum to overtake Shaffer while doing his best to hold off the efforts of Kinser and Swindell who were on the move as well.

Just as Shaffer had distanced himself considerably over Lasoski, only two additional laps had been completed before the second red flag of the evening came out, this time for Chico regular Sean Fenn. Fenn's 47th Gold Cup ended in turn two when he went upside down, causing serious damage to the suspension of his Fenn Farms #36 .

With Fenn's car cleared from the track, Shaffer was responsible for setting the pace once again as he powered his Vivarin #11H into the first set of turns and continued to maintain a low line on the track to prevent Lasoski from making any passing attempts of a low nature. By the 18th lap both Shaffer and Lasoski had accelerated to a lead of several car lengths over Kinser who too had worked his way to a healthy distance over Swindell.

With 25-laps complete, lapped traffic became factor for Shaffer as he was forced to slow on the backstretch and allowed Lasoski to make an inside pass nd take over the lead. The heavy traffic continued to be factor for the next two laps, however, slowing Lasoski as well and permitting Shaffer to remain within striking distance up until the 27th circuit when a yellow flag flew for Haudenschild who spun in turn three.

On the restart, Lasoski used the clear track to his advantage as he powered to a significant lead over Shaffer who continued to run second with the lapped car of Den Jacobs between Lasoski and himself. At the 35-lap mark, Lasoski began working his way into lapped traffic to protect his top spot from Shaffer which eventually insured the $20,000 victory as crossed the checkered flag ahead of Shaffer,Mark Kinser, Swindell, Tim Kaeding and Daryn Pittman.

"We just kept working on the car every chance we got and after the break when the lights went out we seemed to have it set up right where we wanted it, so I guess that long wait to get back to racing paid off." said Lasoski. " Most of the time its better to be running in second when your in lapped traffic and that was the case tonight as I just was able to drive where he (Shaffer) didn’t."

The B-main event on Saturday night saw the green flag come out a pair of Silver Dollar Speedway champions as Sean Fenn and Jason York set the pace from the front row. With one lap complete a yellow flag brought the event to a pause when Gerrold Hopping and and Robert Farr tangled on the front stretch, forcing Farr to stall at track side.

Once the event was restarted, Fenn powered to a lead of several car lengths over Tommy Tarlton and York, who fell to third and was busy holding off the challenges of World of Outlaws' point leader and nine-time Gold Cup champion Steve Kinser until the sixth lap when the two collided, breaking Kinser's front nose wing and cutting the right rear tire of York's #25. Kinser was able to continue driving without coming to a stop and took the third position behind Tarlton.

With York joining the line-up at the rear, the ensuing restart had Fenn continuing to run out in front followed by Tarlton and Kinser who was forced to adjust his driving style to allow for the dismounted wing that was folded forward on the Quaker State #11 causing the front-end to lift repeatedly on the straights. When the checkered flag came out on the 20-lap affair it was local favorite Fenn picking up the win and transferring into the A-feature along with Tarlton, Kinser and Greg Hodnett who passed former Chico champion Shane Scott on the final lap to earn the fourth transfer spot. Dennis Wood finished fifth with Scott falling to the sixth spot at the finish.

Roger Crockett of Rio Linda was the driver with the highest finish aboard a 360 cubic inch powered sprint car Saturday night. Crockett, who normally competes in the California Sprint Car Civil War Race Series and in Saturday night competition at Placerville Speedway, placed 12th in the 20-lap B-feature, earning him a $1000 bonus awarded by event promoter John Padjen.

The 12-lap C-main event had Billy Wallace of Grass Valley taking the initial lead at the green flag ahead of second place starter Mike Henry. On the second lap, Robert Farr of Australia overtook the bridesmaid position from Henry and then passed Wallace one lap later for the lead in the first turn. At the checkered flag Farr was followed across the line by Wallace, Henry, Jim Trulli and Steve Fehrman.

Saturday nights D-main event consisted of 12-laps. When the green flag flew in this event, Jon Lovell of Yuba City led from green flag to checkered. Lovell earned the win over Gary Morgan, Bryan Amos and John Gray.

In the 10-lap e-main on Saturday, action saw Mark Moore take the initial lead until the second lap when Gary Willey took over the top spot and Randy Tiner moved into second place just before a red flag flew on the fourth lap when Mark Moore, Mark Tabor Jr. and Chris Scott tangled in the fourth turn with Scott going upside down.

When green flag racing resumed it only took Tiner one lap to overtake Willey for the top transfer position. Jim Marsh finished third followed by Bob Maiwald and Eric Hopkins.
