Shaffer wins 25 lap Thursday night preliminary feature
Fourth place starter advances into race lead when Hodnett suffers mechanical woes
In the first of three nights of Pennzoil World of Outlaws competition Thursday night, Tim Schafer of Aliquippa, PA bested the competition at John Padjen's Silver Dollar Speedway and took home the gold in the first preliminary feature event of the 47th Annual Gold Cup Race of Champions.

After finishing fourth in his heat race and the Channellock Dash, Schafer took the green flag for Thursday's 25-lap event from the fourth starting spot behind polesitter Greg Hodnett, Johnny Herrera and Brent Kaeding. The official start saw Hodnett performing much like he had all evening as he muscled ahead of Herrera and Kaeding while Schafer maintained the fourth position.

Hawaiian Tropics Bikini Contest tonight
Post-race activity includes crowning of Miss Gold Cup & chili feed
Last Night was “Ladies Night” on the Silver Dollar Fairground but tonight it’s boys night out at the Silver Dollar Pavilion as John Padjen Motorsports presents the Hawaiian Tropics International Miss Gold Cup Bikini Contest and Gold Cup Chili Feed following tonight’s racing action.

A legend in the way of after race activities at the annual Gold Cup, the millennium edition of the Miss Gold Cup Bikini Contest will take on a new look with members of the Miss Hawaiian Tropic International “California Bikini Team” joining in the festivities.

2001 Gold Cup scheduled one week earlier
When an internet press release announced a televised World of Outlaws race during the second week of September in 2001 the result was cyber pandemonium on various race related message boards as many fans became concerned that this may be the final Gold Cup featuring the World of Outlaws.

Such is not the case and those assuming the worst can now rest assured as the dates for the 2001 Gold Cup Race of Champions have been adjusted to allow for the increasingly popular World of Outlaws television schedule.
