1999 Gold Cup Race of Champions Jac Haudenschild with John Padjen celebrating in victory lane.

CHICO, CA (9-18-99) - For a driver who originally questioned traveling the distance to make the California swing, the decision to do so certainly paid off for Ohio's Jac Haudenschild. After making a triumphant return to the Pennzoil World of Outlaws series with a victory at San Jose Speedway, '"The Wild Child" accomplished the one goal he set for himself when he made the decision to come to the Golden State by posting his second straight win in the 46th Annual Gold Cup Race of Champions at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico.

At the waving of the green flag in the feature event, trouble immediately broke out on the front chute as leaders Andy Hillenburg and Sammy Swindell collided at the starting line and a multi-car collision ensued involving a total of eight competitors. Hillenburg was the recipient of the most serious damage as he was the first car to go upside down after shearing off the left hand side of Swindell's mount on the front stretch.

Following the initial collision, Hillenburg took a violent flip off of the second turn as an onslaught of oncoming traffic then became involved including third place starter Stevie Smith who also took flight in the wreckage along with Jason Statler. Kevin Pylant too was collected in the melee as well as Danny Lasoski, Tommy Tarlton and Brad Furr. All of those involved managed to return to the grid for the restart with the exception of Hillenburg, Swindell and Smith..

Following the opening lap incident, the new line up placed Brent Kaeding on the pole with Kevin Gobrecht on the outside the new second row for the green flag consisted of Donny Schatz and Jeff Swindell with Thursday night preliminary winner Tim Kaeding starting in the fifth position inside of Dale Blaney. For Haudenschild, the revised line up also proved beneficial as he advanced two rows from his original starting position and took the new green flag from the seventh slot.

With the waving of the official green, Gobrecht out powered Kaeding out of the fourth turn to take the lead but when Schatz spun to the infield on the backstretch a yellow flag gathered the field for another restart. On the third attempt Kaeding answered back to Gobrecht as he pulled the front wheels off the track surface in the fourth turn and took command of the field. As Kaeding quickly worked his way to a lead of two to three car lengths over Gobrecht, Jeff Swindell sat in third as Tim Kaeding moved into the hunt as well and battled for the fourth position with Haudenschild prior to a caution on the fifth circuit when Daryn Pitman stalled on the high side of the second turn.

On the restart, Gobrecht made an inside attempt to pass Kaeding in the first and second turns but was unable to do so as Kaeding had the momentum on the high side to muscle his way to a lead of two to three car lengths ahead of Gobrecht as Swindell moved in on the two top runners and took the second position from Gobrecht within two laps of the restart and set his sights on Kaeding. On the 10th lap the two top runners worked their way within lapped traffic which allowed Swindell to close in on Kaeding's lead and overtake the top position on the 14th circuit by traveling low on the front stretch beside Kaeding and maintaining his stance on the track into turns one and two where Kaeding drifted high.

On the 15th circuit Gobrecht overtook Kaeding's bridesmaid position and Haudenschild worked the fifth position. With 19 laps complete, Swindell was clearly losing his brakes as a bright orange glow was apparent from the rear of his #104 Plus Octane Boost machine. With the combination of Swindell's brake situation combined with lapped traffic, Haudenschild took advantage of the situation and moved towards the front on the 21st lap after passing both Tim and Brent Kaeding. Continuing to chase Swindell in lapped traffic, Haudenschild made short work of Gobrecht on the 26th lap by going to the low side of turns one and two and then setting his sights on Swindell.

With Swindell running strong out in front it began to look doubtful as to whether or not Haudenschild would have enough laps to close in on Swindell. After a series of caution flags and restarts Haudenschild managed to close the gap between he and Swindell and on the 37th circuit he worked himself into the lead when both he and Swindell were slowed to nearly a stop in the first a second turn when Tim Kaeding spun directly in front of the leaders and kept his machine under power. As Swindell stomped the brakes and swerved around the spinning car of Kaeding, Haudenschild had more time to react as he approached Swindell, followed him and then accelerated past him as they pulled away from the incident entering the back stretch.

Once he was in front, Haudenschild dominated the waning laps of the event where he held off Swindell to post the $20,000 win. Brent Kaeding finished third in the event followed by Donny Schatz, Steve Kinser and Mark Kinser who placed sixth to maintain his World of Outlaws point lead.

"The accident on the first lap helped us win this one, I don't think we would have been able to get up there if that hadn't taken place," said Haudenschild. "When that car spun in front of us I didn't thin k I would take the lead, to tell you the truth I thought it was all over right there for both Jeff and I. I wasn't thinking something like that was going to put me into the lead. The Gold Cup was one of the reasons we came to California after winning last year and that all paid off right here."

The 25-lap B-feature Saturday night looked much like an average World of Outlaws A-main event line up as point leader Mark Kinser took to the grid in the eighth starting position and was joined in the line-up by the "King of the Outlaws" Steve Kinser who started on the pole inside of Greg DeCaires.

At the waving of the green flag in this event, the King of the Outlaws powered his #11 Quaker State Maxim to the point on the front stretch while DeCaires maintained the second position ahead of Randy Tiner and Murphy. With three laps on the scoresheet, a yellow flag delayed the event when Jim Skinner and Kyle Schild got together on the inside of the fourth turn forcing Skinner into a spin and stall to draw the yellow.

On the restart, Kinser wasted no time in resuming his healthy lead over DeCaires as Mark muscled his way through in the field in an effort to protect his series point lead by means of locking a starting position in the feature event. With five laps complete, Mark Kinser worked his way into position to do just that as he advanced into third behind DeCaires just as another caution came out when Brooke Tatnell spun and stalled in the third turn.

On the third restart of the event, as expected "The King continued his dominance as cousin Mark began working on DeCaires for the second position. In the fourth turn of the sixth lap he had moved the Mopar #5m into the bridesmaid position just before the yellow flew once again when Johnny Rodriguez pulled off of turn three and came to a halt with mechanical woes.

With the green flag out again, the battle of the Kinser clan ensued as Mark set his sights on Steve's lead positions. Meanwhile , decries had his hands full in the third position, fending of the efforts of Tiner, Murphy and Lance Blevins. At the 12-lap mark both Steve and Mark dueled with lapped traffic, both finding the best line around the Chico clay in the middle groove of the track.

At the 17-lap mark, Steve Kinser had again muscled his way to a healthy lead ahead of Mark Kinser which he maintained all the way to the line where the order was Steve Kinser, Mark Kinser, Greg DeCaires and Randy Tiner.

In early preliminary action on Saturday, the first feature event of the evening was an E-main event which was claimed by former track champion Shane Scott of Chico. Scott was followed across the line by Keith Collins, Dave Clarke and Jim Trulli. In the following D-main event, the first red flag of the evening came out when Keith Collins went upside down on the front stretch at the completion of the opening lap. Collins was uninjured in the crash and when green flag racing resumed Kevin Cory picked up the victory ahead of Mark Cooper, Marc Mackay and Danny Ochs.

In the C-main event, the second red flag of the evening came out early in this event as Jeff Young of Roseville went upside down in the first turn. Once this event that transferred three finishers into the B-feature, Todd Bammer took command of the field as he held off the challenges of Jim Skinner, Kyle Schild and Andy Forsberg to the line.
